Unwavering Faith through Trusting God

Being a Christian, we get our faith tested from time to time. It could be the loss of a job, car, home, loved one, etc. It could even be a loss of sight or something. I was just watching the news and saw where a guy lost his sight for over 14 years! He never lost faith in God. One day he had a ruptured cataract and had to have surgery on his eyes. After the surgery the guy actually regained all of his sight. He was able to see his wife again and he was finally able to see his grandkids for the first time.  The man never questioned God or lost his faith after 14 years of not seeing.
I’ve had my share of medical issues as well as close family members. My senior year of high school my mother had a rare disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It’s a neurological disorder that causes your nervous system to be attacked and caused paralysis temporarily. My mom wasn’t able to walk, talk, eat, or breathe on her own. She was in a coma for months. Doctors originally thought it was the West Nile Virus. As a family, we prayed and had a prayer chain started for my mother. People from all over were praying for her. We never lost faith during this trying time. It was tense and the whole family was on edge. My mother finally came out of the coma and had to go to rehabilitation. She had to learn to walk, feed, and take care of herself again. Our faith and trust in God never wavered during this process.
We all go through things in life that may make you question God. You may think, “Why am I or a family member going through this?” Remember God never gives us more than we can handle. We all have family as well as brothers and sisters in Christ to be with us when we go through these trying times. I’m here for all of you as well. You are never going through anything alone. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for prayer, someone to hear your thoughts, or to get advice about your issue.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with righteous right hand.”Isaiah 41:10

  1. Yes. It is true that we all experience apparent trials in our spiritual journeys. I prefer, though, to see them as divine offerings of grace allowing us the opportunity to grow in faith. This view allows us to perceive our respective trials not as negative experiences to be gotten through, but rather as invitations by God to grow into the non-corrupted eternal beings He intends us to ultimately be. Putting a positive spin on our sufferings certainly doesn't make them hurt less, but allows us to maintain an open accepting attitude in which our experiences, painful as they sometimes can be, are seen as being possibly reasonable in a world that all too often appears chaotic and without meaning. I know full well how radical this may seem. But, we see with the eyes of men. The daily offering of our various sufferings to God not only helps us to become co-sufferers with Christ in the One Body, but additionally gives us a sense of fortitude and perseverance in dealing with our daily crosses. During my career work in hospitals I've worked with a number of patients afflicted with the frightening ascending paralysis know as Guillain-Barre. I thank God for your mother's recovery. Stay strong in your journey and please remember me in your prayers.
