Seek God in Our Times of Weakness

     This Christmas Eve was really special for my family. We celebrated the night with all the aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents like we normally do but this year we all pitched in and made a video dedicated to sharing our love for my grandparents. We all had the chance to share funny memories and open our hearts so my grandparents could see how their love has greatly impacted our lives. One of my uncles preferred to do his in person. So when the video ended, my uncle walked to the front of the living room, put on his reading glasses, and began to read a heart wrenching speech to his parents. 

     After his speech, he was compelled to share a story of a friend whose family was recently struck with tragedy. Their child died all too soon and spoke about how that following Sunday, the family could be seen at church, still worshipping God. He brought up an eye opening fact that we never really thought about before. He began to tell us how, in a situation when a loved one tragically dies, the ones left behind are stranded with the question, WHY? Why would God let that happen? Why would God take her/him away from us like that? My uncle explained that people (not everyone) will turn away from God, blaming Him for their loved ones death. 

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." - Psalm 147:3

     The truth is…over 6,000 people die every hour on this planet. That's over 55 million per year. One death can affect more than one person. So think about this…how many of those people per hour, per year are blaming God and turning away from him? God does allows tragic events to happen because he gave us free will, but I have always been told, everything happens for a reason. Most likely, we will never know why it happens but in these times, we need to stay strong. If we see a family member or friend going down this path, this the time they need you most. Iron sharpens iron.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1

     Have you ever seen the movie “Signs”? Its a movie released in 2002 by director M. Night Shyamalan. In the movie, a former priest blames God for the death of his wife after a tragic roadside accident. His wife was out for a night stroll down a dirt road and she was struck by a pickup truck. The driver dosed off behind the wheel, the first he has ever done so in his life as, we are told. The driver later tells the former priest, “Why did I fall asleep at the wheel at that exact moment? If I would have dosed off at any other time, I would have ended up in a ditch with only a headache the next day and she would be alive still. It's like it was supposed to happen.”

     The death of his wife tears the former priest up inside as he struggles to continue on with his two young children, brother, and his faith in God. To make matters worse, fears of an impending alien invasion begin to show up in the form of crop circles and strange events on his farm. Details of the family are shared with the viewer such as the daughter leaving water all around the house, the son having breathing issues, and the brother who feels compelled to swing at anything with a bat in his hands. All these details, these signs, serve a key purpose to the film’s plot. These signs all happened for a reason. They served a purpose just like in the real world. Although, not everyone gets to be like the father in this movie and link all the signs up to discover God’s reasoning.

"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18

     Death will occur. Tragedy does strike but when it does, don’t criticize God. Don’t blame God for a death, loss of a job, or any other life changing event…because God gave us free will. Everything has and will occur for a reason. Sometimes we can see what that purpose is, like the father in the movie. We just need to trust God and put our faith in Him like my uncle’s friend did because God’s strength is greatest when we are at our weakest. Seek God out in your weakest moments and let Him carry you in your times of trouble.

"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
