Think Before You Speak

The automobile....thousands of pounds of metal and fiberglass with a motor that can cruise at high speeds. These vehicles are effortlessly guided in any direction by a small steering wheel. The same could be said about large ships directed by a rudder (an instrumental piece yet it's small compared to the entire ship). Its amazing how such a small mechanical part is responsible for large actions

The tongue is no different. Its small but the body tends to listen to what it says. It has incredible power over us and others. It has the power to build one another and the power to destroy. There is a reason the bible describes the tongue as a doubled-edge sword. If you are not careful, your words can inflict wounds.

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." - Proverbs 15:1-4

Every word from our mouth should be uplifting, loving, and kind...exactly like Jesus did. Refrain from gossiping, speaking negatively, and spouting hate or anger. One careless word can cause huge damage. The tongue has the capacity to corrupt the whole of our being.

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."1 Thessalonians 5:11

So when you hear others gossiping, don't take part. Either tell those, what they are doing is wrong because we should always build one another up OR simply walk away. The "Did you know..." and "Have you heard about so and so..." spits venom on other's reputation. Which can hurt others so badly that it alters how they view themselves and how they think the world views them. It helps to avoid watching shows that are built on Gossip News because what we watch influences how we act too.

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."Ephesians 4:29
"A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends."Proverbs 16:28

Think before you speak. Ask yourself, "Is what I am about to say positive or negative?" We all have those moments where we share our opinion when no one asked for it. We say, "This is what ____ should have done." By doing so, we are viewing ourselves as better than others.   Start controlling your tongue and your body will follow. Encourage others, Love them, and Help to build them up.

"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless."James 1:26
