Glass Half Full or Half Empty?

Are you a positive or negative person? If you say positive...congrats! That’s super to hear but if you lean more towards being negative, then let’s change our entire way of thinking today!

"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." - Proverbs 17:22

Think of a hurricane, and make it the biggest storm you can imagine. Now walk into the storm and hold on! Being a negative person puts you in the strong, painful, and destructive rain bands of that hurricane. The winds grow stronger the more you focus on the bad in life to the point you think the storm is too much to handle, causing some to make an unfortunate decision. As you walk towards the eye of the storm you will be surprised to see people who are smiling. They are happy even though they are constantly surrounded by the destructive winds of negativity. That's what happens when you are constantly positive and able to focus on all God has provided you with.

Each time we criticize other’s life or choices, when we talk about the troubles of our day, focus on the bad, assume the worst, or seem to be the drag of the group...we allow negativity to slowly eat away at our happiness. The more we allow negativity out our mouths, the more our attitude adjusts to feeling negative. That’s not how God wants us to live. He wants to see us thrive and prosper; to be happy and filled with joy!

“Negativity says that I’ve been cheated in the distribution of resources and gifts. It says that I can’t trust anybody, that nobody really likes me, and that frankly I don’t really like myself. I assume things will fail and that I will be disappointed. Again!” - Bible Study

Want to know how to fix this? As always, the first thing we must do is pray for God to help. Tell Him you need His help and pray to see the positive side of life more frequently and for happiness.

Next, we stop with any and all negative talk. Easier said than done but with practice and determination, you will become a positive person soon enough. When you notice you are speaking negative, immediately stop yourself and say out loud, “No...I’m not going to let negativity consume me any longer.” Words are powerful and with repetition, your mind will begin to adjust.

Follow it up with something positive! If you were talking bad about someone, stop and say something nice about them. Talking about your bad day at work with your spouse? Stop and focus on the good that happened. This reprogramming of the mind will help you find joy wherever you go. It allows you to shed stress and let go of problems faster instead of boiling over. You will Love life more, the way God intended it so. And don’t tell me that nothing good ever happens in your life. God is constantly blessing us! He is always by our side. You just need to pay attention to how God is working in your life and continue to build that relationship with Him.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." - Philippians 4:8

  1. This is a beautiful piece. I try as much as possible to be positive because our words are powerful. In time of trials I watch what I say about myself and trust God over every storm. It's important we remain positive. #positivevibesonly

    1. Thank you Elizabeth! Words are indeed very powerful. There is a reason the bible describes the tongue as a double edged sword because it can destroy and bring harm to ourselves and others around us. We are so happy to hear you are staying positive, even in the storms of life. With more and more practice, it will become easier to stay positive. With positivity and love, you allow the light of God and Jesus to shine through you. Eventually, others around you will wonder "What does she have that I don't? What makes her so happy all the time?" That's your moment to proudly reply "I have Jesus. I have a relationship with Jesus and our Father God, and you can too."
