Tithes

A topic that I have recently been discussing amongst family and friends involves tithes. How much are we supposed to tithe? Do we have to tithe when we are going through some financial issues? Are there ways to tithe that doesn’t involve money? Depending on whom you ask you will get different answers.

There are several verses that talk about tithes.

Numbers 18:26 says
“Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.’”

Genesis 14:19-20 states
“and he blessed Abram, saying ‘Blessed be Abram by God most high, creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most high, who delivered your enemies into your hand.’ Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”

It seems several verses in the bible regarding tithes refer to a tenth. I know people who give a tenth of their income and I know people who give above and below that. The question about tithing during financial issues is also a touchy subject.

Malachi 3:8-11 states,
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty."

As far as ways to tithe instead of money, I personally believe you can volunteer at your church or in the community, donate food, clothing, toys, etc. to your local church or a community food bank. Is this an alternative to tithing? I think God knows what you are capable of tithing.

What are your opinions on tithing? Do you think you should tithe during financial hardships? Do you think donating items is an alternative to tithing? I would love to get the opinions of our viewers on this important subject.
